This has gone spectacularly terrible (a Linux update)

I’ve paused my Linux quest. My Lian Li SL 120 Uni-Fans do not want to work in Linux.

Across many weeks and hours, I cannot get Fan Control / Cooler Control / Unisync to see my fans.

A Reddit / Kagi / Google Quest

I tried searching everywhere. Lots of Reddit / forum posts[1] suggested it was likely due to my Lian Li fans being connected to an L-Hub. So I ordered extension cables, plugged my fans directly into my MSI motherboard’s fan headers, went into the BIOS and set fan curves.

FML part 2

Booting into windows and the fan curves work. My gaming room / office has some warm ambient temps, so the fans ramped pretty quick. Booting into Linux and nothing but neutral silence. I can feel my recently purchased Radeon 9070XT cooking. We’re low-and-slow roasting all my expensive components and no software in Linux can SEE THESE FANS.

Giving up for now

All this time, I’m not gaming on my gaming PC. Windows isn’t perfect, but my fans work at the end of the day and I can game in peace for now. I’m going to explore the Windows Full Screen Experience (I’m sure Phil Spencer is getting his wings) for now while I continue to monitor Linux developments or try an alternate OS to Bazzite.

  1. I also hate chatting on Discord / generally being online, so I haven’t gone down that path. I’m sure there are nice people willing to help, but I hate life right now lul. ↩︎
